Hoursight Help

Hoursight is a focus timer that lives in your Mac menu bar. These answers cover what the first release actually does. Can’t find yours? Write to us.

  • Focus block
  • Continuous blocks
  • Under 30 min, not counted
A session counts as a focus block once it reaches 30 minutes and you save it. A block you start within 10 minutes after the previous one ends, and also complete, is marked as a continuous block.

01Timing

How do I start and end a session?

Click Hoursight in the menu bar to open its menu, then click Start (Start Next Block while the rest timer runs). The timer counts up and the menu bar shows how long you’ve been focusing. It doesn’t stop on its own at 30 minutes; you choose when to click End (before 30 minutes the button is Discard, which doesn’t save). You can also double-press the right Option key — it does what the menu’s main button does at that moment.

What counts as a focus block?

A single session of 30 minutes or more that you save. It is the unit Hoursight uses to measure focus. Sessions under 30 minutes, sessions you discard, and sessions that aren’t saved don’t count. After a block ends, the menu shows a rest timer; if you click Start Next Block within 10 minutes and complete that block, it’s marked as a continuous block. It’s only a mark: each block’s time is still counted separately.

Why does the right Option shortcut need Input Monitoring?

macOS requires this permission before an app can notice the right Option double-press while you work in other apps. Hoursight uses it for that one gesture only: it keeps just a temporary state for the check and never saves or sends your keystrokes or what you type. Without it, you can still time from the menu; when the permission is needed, the menu shows Open Input Monitoring Settings. You can turn it off any time in System Settings › Privacy & Security › Input Monitoring.

02Feedback and statistics

What is the small card after I save?

Each time you save a focus block, a small card shows today’s total and compares it, at the same time of day, with yesterday, the same day last week, and your usual pace. Up, down, or the same, it’s shown as it is. The card hides after 8 seconds; you can see it again under Last completed in the menu, and look back at every result in Completion Recaps.

Where are my statistics and history?

Choose Statistics & History in the menu. Look back by day and by week at the time you put in and the length of your focus blocks; a session that crosses midnight is split between the two days by the time spent in each. Hoursight lets you know when you set a new record, and a record stays as it was even if you edit your history later.

Can I edit or delete a record?

Yes. In Statistics & History you can change a record’s time and note, or delete it. Saved recaps and records aren’t recalculated.

03Free and paid

Can I use Hoursight without paying?

Yes. Statistics, recaps, and history stay unrestricted. For 3 days from the day you first start a session, there’s no limit; after that, you can start 2 focus sessions a day for free.

What’s the difference between subscribing and Lifetime?

Monthly, Yearly, and the one-time Lifetime purchase unlock exactly the same features, with unlimited sessions. Your first subscription starts with 1 month free, with unlimited sessions during the trial; after that it renews automatically on the plan you chose, and you can cancel any time in your Apple account. Prices are as shown in the App Store.

How do I restore a purchase?

Open Purchase & Access from the menu and click Restore Purchases at the bottom of the window. Restoring brings back your access only, not your local records.

How do I manage or cancel a subscription?

In the Purchase & Access window, click Manage Subscription ↗ to open Apple’s subscription page. Apple handles subscriptions, charges, and refunds.

If I buy Lifetime, is my subscription cancelled?

No. Lifetime doesn’t cancel an existing subscription or credit what you’ve paid; cancel it yourself in Apple’s subscription settings.

04Your data

Where are my records stored?

Only on this Mac. Hoursight needs no sign-up, doesn’t upload your records to any server, and doesn’t sync them between devices. See the Privacy Policy.

Will my records move to a new Mac?

Not automatically: records don’t sync, and Restore Purchases brings back access only, not records.

05Language and menu bar

How do I change the language?

In the menu, under Language, choose Match System, 简体中文, English, or 日本語. If the language on screen would change, Hoursight needs to relaunch; choose Later to switch the next time it launches. Your records aren’t affected.

Hoursight is gone from the menu bar?

When the menu bar runs out of room, the icon can end up behind the notch or be tucked away by a menu bar manager. Open Hoursight again (double-click it in the Finder or open it with Spotlight) and a panel appears near the top of the screen: open the menu from there, or turn on the block strip.

What is the block strip?

A thin strip at the top center of the screen that shows the timer state and today’s total. Turn it on with Show today’s block strip in the menu; it’s off by default.
